Basic Korean Phrases You Can Learn from K-pop Demon Hunters

If “Golden” has been stuck in your head or you’ve been vibing to Saja Boys’ “Soda Pop,” you’re gonna love this new lesson!


K-pop Demon Hunters is an American animated fantasy-action film that follows three badass K-pop idols—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—who disguises as demon slayers while topping the charts as the group HUNTR/X. Their newest challenge? A rival K-pop boy group—who just happen to be demons—threatening to break the barrier between the human and demon worlds.


This trending Netflix film got the drama, killer music (literally), and Korean phrases from the dubbed version that Korean learners will love. So, let’s dive in and learn some Korean with K-pop Demon Hunters!



Script:


루미: 마를 돕는 놈하고 말 섞기 싫어.

진우: 나 살려고 하는 일이야 그래.

진우: 내가 도우면 귀마가 내 기억을 지워 준댔어 그럼 머릿속 목소리도 사라지지.

루미: 한심하네.

진우: 내가 한심해?

진우: 문양 애기도 못 꺼내는 주제에.


Rumi: Not gonna talk to someone who’s helping Gwi-Ma.

Jinu: I’m helping myself.

Jinu: Look, if I help him, he’s promised to erase my memories, and these voices in my head will be gone.

Rumi: Pathetic.

Jinu: I’m pathetic?

Jinu: You can’t even talk about your patterns.



1. 말을 섞다: To talk with (someone)

"루미: 귀마를 돕는 놈하고 말 섞기 싫어."


"Rumi: Not gonna talk to someone who’s helping Gwi-Ma."

말을 섞다

Meaning:

It's literal meaning was "to mix words", but used as an idiom, it means "to talk to someone".


Example Sentences:

  1. 그날 이후로 우리 한마디도 말 안 섞었어. Since that day, we haven’t exchanged a single word.

  2. 모르는 친구랑 말 섞어 보고 싶어요. I want to try talking with someone I don't know.

  3. 처음에는 말 섞는 것도 어려웠는데, 지금은 친구가 됐어. At first, even talking to him was hard, but now we've become friends.



2. 놈: Guy / jerk (derogatory)

"루미: 귀마를 돕는 하고 말 섞기 싫어."


"Rumi: Not gonna talk to someone who’s helping Gwi-Ma."

놈

Meaning:

This is a slang/derogatory word for "guy" or "jerk".  It’s usually negative or rude.


Example Sentences:

  1. 그 놈 믿지 마. 항상 거짓말해. Don’t trust that guy. He always lies.

  2. 그 놈 또 지각했어. That guy was late again.

  3. 이상한 놈이 따라오고 있었어. A weird guy was following me.



3. 한심하다: Pathetic / pitiful / shameful

루미: 한심하네. 

진우: 내가 한심해?


Rumi: Pathetic.

Jinu: I’m pathetic?

한심하다

Meaning:

It describes someone who is weak, foolish, or disappointing, and is used to look down on someone.


Example Sentences:

  1. 내 실수 때문에 한심했어요. I felt pathetic because of my mistake.

  2. 그렇게 울기만 하는 건 한심해. Just crying like that is pathetic.

  3. 한심하게 가만히 있을 수 없어! I can't just sit around doing nothing!
