๐Ÿ“š Korean Grammar Tip: Using -๊ฒŒ with Verbs

๐Ÿ“˜ Korean Grammar Tip: Using -๊ฒŒ with Verbs

The Korean suffix -๊ฒŒย is a super useful little piece that attaches to verbs to express purpose, method, emotion,ย or causation. Letโ€™s break down how it works and when to use it!

1. To Show Purpose or Result

Think of this as the Korean way to say โ€œso thatโ€ย or โ€œin order to.โ€Youโ€™re doing something with a goal in mind.

  • ์•Œ๋žŒ์„ ๋งž์ท„์–ด์š”.ย โ†’ โ€œI set an alarm.โ€

  • ์ผ์ฐ ์ผ์–ด๋‚˜๊ฒŒ ์•Œ๋žŒ์„ ๋งž์ท„์–ด์š”.ย โ†’ โ€œI set the alarm so that I wake up early.โ€

In this structure, -๊ฒŒย connects an action with its desired outcome.

2. To Describe the Way or Manner Something Is Done

Here, -๊ฒŒย shows howย something is done.Itโ€™s like saying โ€œin a way thatโ€ฆโ€ or โ€œin such a manner thatโ€ฆโ€

  • ํฌ๊ฒŒ ๋งํ•ด ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”.โ†’ โ€œPlease speak loudly.โ€(Speak in a way that people can hear.)

This usage is common with adverbs like ํฌ๊ฒŒย (loudly), ๋น ๋ฅด๊ฒŒย (quickly), etc.

3. To Express Emotion or Leave an Impression

Use -๊ฒŒย with adjectives to show how something made someone feel.Youโ€™re describing an emotional effect.

  • ๊ทธ ์˜ํ™”๋Š” ๊ฐ๋™๋˜๊ฒŒ ๋๋‚ฌ์–ด์š”.โ†’ โ€œThe movie ended in a touching way.โ€

Youโ€™ll often see this form used with words like ์žฌ๋ฏธ์žˆ๊ฒŒย (in a fun way), ์Šฌํ”„๊ฒŒย (sadly), ๊ฐ๋™๋˜๊ฒŒย (touchingly).

4. Causative Expression: -๊ฒŒ ํ•˜๋‹ค

This is used when someone makesย or letsย someone else do something.

  • ์—„๋งˆ๊ฐ€ ์•„์ด๋ฅผ ์šธ๋ฆฌ๊ฒŒ ํ–ˆ์–ด์š”.โ†’ โ€œMom made the child cry.โ€

Here, ๊ฒŒ ํ•˜๋‹คย turns a verb into a causative expression โ€” you're causing an action to happen.
