저는 지난 한주간 한국에서 가족들과 설날를 보냈어요! 🎊 한국에서는 음력 1월 1일을 설날로 지내요. 이 날은 가족들이 다 함께 모이는 특별한 날이에요. 또, 한국에서 설날은 새해를 시작하는 날일 뿐만 아니라, 조상님께 감사하는 마음을 담아 차례를 지내고 가족 간의 정을 나누는 소중한 날이에요. I spent the past week celebrating Seollal (Lunar New Year) with my family in Korea! 🎊 In Korea, we celebrate Seollal on the first day of the lunar calendar. It’s a special day when families gather together. But Seollal isn’t just about welcoming the new year—it’s also a meaningful time to honor our ancestors through ancestral rites and share love with family.

🌅 설날 아침, 세배와 덕담

Seollal Morning: New Year’s Bows and Blessings

설날 아침이 되면, 가족들이 한자리에 모여서 세배를 드려요. 아이들은 어른들께 공손히 절을 하고, 어른들은 덕담과 함께 세뱃돈을 주세요. 덕담에는 "올 한 해 건강하게 지내라", "축복이 가득하길 바란다"와 같은 따뜻한 말들이 들어 있어요. 요즘에는 많은 사람들이 세배를 할 때 한복을 입지 않지만, 고운 한복을 입고 절을 하는 모습은 정말 아름답고 정겹답니다. 세배를 끝낸 후에는 가족들과 기념사진을 찍으며 행복한 순간을 남겨요.

On the morning of Seollal, families gather to perform saebae—a deep bow to elders as a sign of respect. Children bow to their elders, and in return, they receive saebaetdon (New Year's money) along with warm words of encouragement. These blessings usually include messages like, "Stay healthy this year!" or "May your year be full of good fortune!" These days, not everyone wears traditional hanbok while doing saebae, but when people do, the colorful outfits make the moment feel even more special. After the bows, families take photos together to capture the happy memories.

🍽️ 설날 음식, 떡국과 명절 음식

Seollal Food: Tteokguk and Holiday Dishes

세배 후에는 모두 함께 명절 음식을 나눠 먹어요. 설날에 빠질 수 없는 음식은 바로 떡국이에요. 떡국을 한 그릇 먹으면 한 살 더 먹는다고 해요. 떡국의 하얀 떡은 깨끗하고 새로운 출발을 의미하고, 둥근 모양은 화목과 조화를 상징한다고 해요. 떡국 외에도 잡채, 전, 갈비찜 같은 다양한 음식을 함께 먹으며 새해의 시작을 기념해요. 가족들과 맛있는 음식을 나누는 시간은 언제나 특별하고 즐거운 시간이죠.

After saebae, everyone gathers to enjoy delicious holiday food. One dish you can’t miss on Seollal is tteokguk (rice cake soup). There’s a fun belief that eating a bowl of tteokguk makes you one year older! The white rice cakes symbolize a fresh start, and their round shape represents harmony. Along with tteokguk, families also enjoy dishes like japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), jeon (savory pancakes), and galbijjim (braised short ribs). Sharing a meal with loved ones is always a special and joyful way to start the new year.

🎲 설날 놀이, 윷놀이와 보드게임

Seollal Games: Yutnori and Board Games

설날에는 가족들이 함께 놀이도 즐겨요. 전통적으로는 윷놀이를 많이 하지만, 요즘은 보드게임을 하며 다양한 방식으로 시간을 보내기도 해요. 윷놀이는 나이 상관없이 모두가 함께 즐길 수 있는 전통 놀이로, 윷을 던져 말판을 이동시키면서 승부를 겨루는 게임이에요. 보드게임은 규칙과 전략이 필요해서 또 다른 재미를 준답니다. 이렇게 가족들과 함께 웃고 즐기는 시간은 설날의 큰 행복 중 하나에요. 💕

Seollal is also a time for fun and games! Traditionally, families play yutnori, a Korean board game where players throw wooden sticks called yut to move their pieces on the board. It’s a simple but exciting game that everyone can enjoy, regardless of age. These days, many families also play modern board games together, adding even more variety to the fun. Laughing and playing games with family is one of the best parts of Seollal! 💕
